Bonnie O'Shields
Learning Therapist
Bonnie O’Shields earned a degree in English from Clemson University and is currently completing a Master’s degree in Literacy from Simmons College. She is a Certified Therapist in the Wilson Reading System, which is a research-based, Orton-Gillingham program designed for students who struggle with reading and spelling. She is also a National Trainer for the Wilson Reading System and has trained teachers nationwide on the implementation of the Wilson Reading System in the classroom.
Bonnie works with students in a one-on-one environment at The Speech, Hearing & Learning Center, Inc. where they learn to master reading and spelling in a structured process, learning cumulatively and systematically. This system has been used successfully with students who have been unable to learn spelling and/or reading through traditional basal methods, whole-language or phonics programs. Our approach is systematic (step-by-step), explicit (working one concept at a time), and multisensory (incorporating visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic activities). This means a student will learn how letters look, sound, and even feel.
Outside of teaching reading and spelling, Bonnie is very active at Renfrew Baptist Church in Travelers Rest where her husband, Shawn O’Shields, is the Senior Pastor. She also has two children, Elizabeth (13 years old) and Connor (9 years old) and enjoys the beach and Clemson Football!!
