STEPHEN T. GURYAN, M.A., F.A.A.A, CCC‑A
Executive Director
The Speech, Hearing and Learning Center, Inc.
Stephen Guryan has been on staff as Director of Audiology Services at The Speech, Hearing & Learning Center since 1987, and became the center’s third Executive Director in 2000. While guiding the staff and serving the center’s Board of Directors and the center’s mission are critical roles, he maintains contact with people the center serves by continuing to see patients in the clinic. As a clinical audiologist, Steve conducts diagnostic hearing evaluation and hearing aid fittings for infants through senior adults.
Growing up in Upstate New York and Connecticut, Steve entered the U.S. Air Force at age 19, living in the South and serving on active duty with distinction for 4 years. He continued his military service on active USAF reserves for another 4 years beyond. Following his heart to help others (and a friend’s advice), Steve started his undergraduate education at State University College at Buffalo New York in Speech & Hearing Handicapped Education with an emphasis on speech therapy, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1984. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the State University of New York at Buffalo with Master of Arts in Audiology in 1987, and has been a practicing audiologist ever since. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology, and holds Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech‑Language and Hearing Association. He is a Past President (1993) and fellow of the South Carolina Academy of Audiology.
Steve is experienced in working with all ages in hearing assessment and rehabilitation (except cochlear implants). While he enjoys all facets of his profession, his strongest interests are in adult hearing loss rehabilitation and fitting hearing aid technology, and evaluation of central auditory processing disorders in school aged children.
Steve is married to Barbara Guryan, a speech language pathologist and graduate of Auburn University, and shares with her the joys and trials of raising three school-aged children. He is a member of Covenant United Methodist Church in Greenville, SC and is active in the church’s youth programs, as well as singing and playing guitar in the contemporary praise band. In addition he actively practices martial arts and holds the rank of 2nd Degree Black Belt in Karate and 1st Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. He enjoys fishing, camping and being outdoors. Steve feels that God has led him to this place and time in his life, and while it isn’t always easy, it’s what he is meant to be doing.
