What is Speech-Language Therapy?

What happens during speech therapy?

A speech therapist will evaluate the child and determine the speech and language skills that he or she needs to work on. The therapist will determine a child's specific strengths and needs and establish an organized plan of treatment intervention. Speech therapy includes training and repetitive exercises that can make it easier for some children to speak. Speech therapists also work closely with the family and caregivers of the child.

The therapist works one-on-one with the child or in a small group. During therapy the children may do a variety of age-appropriate fun activities to target the goals that have been set.

How long will my child have to attend Speech therapy?

Speech and language therapy involves multiple activities that will help children meet specific goals. These goals are usually accomplished over time. The length of therapy can not be predicted. Children may show immediate improvement or it may be a very gradual process. The rate and pattern of improvement is different for every child.

How often will my child go to speech therapy?

How often a child has therapy depends on the particular speech problem. Children may need to go more often at first, whereas later the child will not need to go as often and will just need to practice a lot at home.
