Giftedness
What is Giftedness?
Gifted individuals are generally defined as those who display outstanding abilities and/or potential
in any of the following areas:
1) general intelligence,
2) specific academic aptitude,
3) creative thinking,
4) leadership ability,
5) visual and performing arts,
6) psychomotor ability.
Clinicians at The Speech, Hearing, and Learning Center assess for giftedness in the area of general
intelligence and academic aptitude, also considering behavioral maturity.
Some characteristics common to gifted children include;
Unusual curiosity
Excellent memory
Advanced higher-order thinking skills
Advanced language/ vocabulary
Precociousness
Excellent attention and concentration
Social maturity
Sense of humor
