2. What is the purpose of a speech-language evaluation?
A speech and language evaluation can determine whether speech, language, and feeding skills are developing normally,
and whether or not professional intervention is needed. A speech-language pathologist with experience in child development
can evaluate the child's specific strengths and needs and establish an organized plan of intervention if treatment is warranted.

3. How long, should I wait before seeking help from a certified Speech-Language Pathologist?
Early diagnosis and treatment for speech and language problems increases the chances of improvement and can
prevent potential problems with behavior, learning, reading, and social interaction. In short, most Speech-Language
Pathologists would support "the sooner the better" approach to assessment if you have concerns about your child's

5. How do I schedule a speech/language evaluation at the Speech, Hearing, & Learning Center?
1. You may want to contact your doctor to obtain a referral for a speech/language
evaluation, although it is not necessary for an evaluation. By calling the Speech,
Hearing, & Learning Center at 864 331-1400, a staff member will be able to guide you in
scheduling an appointment.
2. Contact your insurance company to determine if a speech/language evaluation is covered
under your particular plan. Insurance does not always cover the examination. You may
qualify for a United Way Fee Subsidy. Please call 864 331-1403 for information on
qualification.
3. Once funding for the evaluation is secured, you may call 864 331-1400 to schedule an
appointment with one of our speech/language pathologists.
4. You may also register for a speech/language screening (See KIDS), which is an
abbreviated assessment that determines whether or not further evaluation is warranted.
5. Complete and return the initial questionnaire regarding your child's development so that
the examining clinician will have sufficient background information on your child before
the evaluation.
